Melbourne 1

The Frenchman gets home from a work Christmas party at 1.30am Friday Night - we have to leave home at 6.45am for the airport and he's grey from a very well enjoyed party... We rest well - but way too short and in the morning he's still looking ill and I (unusually) drive us to the airport. Thankfully he is a Qantas Club member and we check in, snack and download The Chaser's War on Everything before I collapse onto the plane and sleep for much of the flight.

Melbourne is sunny and warmish on arrival, and our hire car is upgraded about 4 levels from 2 door runabout to an impressive Toyota Aurion (think family sedan) in which we explore the coast south to Brighton Beach. There a party of brightly painted beach huts iconicise the place and entice me to take loads of photos because one just must. We head to St Kilda and eat our third breakfast in the open air at a funky cafe, vacating our table to celebrity Andrew G and his dad. He's very cute - Andrew, not his dad. So we shop Chapel street for things we don't really need - and manage to find surprisingly little. Is 80's memorabilia today's fashion? I'm not really too keen to wear flouro t-shirts again but they're ubiquitous, and the Frenchman and I argue about how everyone is looking gay - I say they are gay - he say's they're straight but in what they're wearing - I'd be very surprised. So from what I'm lead to believe, straight guys are looking and behaving gayer than gay men these days. It's a pity as I used to like the look of straight guys...

We catch up with our good friend Michelle who takes us to ever fashionable locations where we catch up on bits we've missed since last we were here, and then head deep into the suburbs where Mr & Mr Suburbia have established a little gay haven in an otherwise dessert. A sunset swim with them at the beach closes the day perfectly (it has turned into a very warm one) with dinner at theirs afterwards. The day has been full, I'm going to rest well, still out here in the quietness of this oasis.

Thanks Anon. for your recommendations for here in Melbourne - Tomorrow I'll see if we can check them out.

Why do so many of the blogs written by gay men have booze and/or boozers in their posts?

Travis: I think a lot more than gay men have their lives affected by alcohol - and you'll probably find it mentioned in a lot of non-gay blogs. You'll not see a lot of it mentioned here as I'm a non drinker (which I might just blog about soon)- and The Frenchman really doesn't have much either - but he'd been wined at the christmas function - those refills that just keep happening when you don't realise it... Alas - it was just a small aspect of the day. Curiously though, it seems to bug you - how are you affected by the frequency of alcoholic blogging?

Hey Travis,Trevor asks a good question there how the bloody hell does it affect you?..its there blog they can write what they want..Trevor I hope you dont mind me saying this to travis! there are plenty of straight guys who drink to excess in this big wide world of ours...I was at a party Saturday night and all the guys(straight) were pissed!maybe I should hhave asked ..do any of you write blogs!but the guy wearing a t shirt that read "Fuck me because I am cute"certainly caught my eye..and cute he was!.
Travis if you hate what you read on gay blogs ..stop reading them!

Wally: thanks for being supportive, but I think it's a legitimate question Travis has asked. If he has found a lot of gay blogs with a high alcohol content - then we should ask why - I know mine is a relative teetotaller - suggesting Travis is new to it, but certainly substance dependance / abuse is a common issue in gay culture. I'm just wondering what his experiences are that seem to make him particularly unhappy or at least curious about it being blogged...

I am an alcoholic. My last drink was June 30th 1983. It makes me sad when I read about gay men getting drunk and it reads like it is normal "OK" behavior. I don't believe getting drunk is OK or normal. Bobby Vanquish (http://bobbyvanquish.blogspot.com/) has just started to blog about his boozing days. Good for him. I don't read straight blogs except the tech blogs written by I assume mostly straight men

Hey guys, alot of things are perceived as 'normal' on the gay scene, booze, drugs and affairs!People joke about going into the K hole, are candid about trying crystal and joke about being rushed to St Vinnies to have your stomach pumped/revived (how embarassing!).I don't think this is the lifestyle the early gay activists strove!
Sorry to be so serious, I'm not normally like this honest!
Great blog guys, keep up the good work Trevor...See you the 16th.
